F027 Forest WSC Filtration Unit for Color Removal

Forest WSC has two ground water plants, and both plants were having color issues. Color issues can be caused by high concentrations of iron and manganese; However, laboratory analysis of the well water showed iron and manganese content significantly below TCEQ limits. Therefore, the color issues are most likely due to lignins and tannins, and the pilot testing was planned on this basis. Pilot studies were conducted at both wells. Multiple pilot testing arrangements were performed using pilot aeration and pilot filtration. The pilot filter employed dual media using greensand plus and anthracite.

The pilot processing was very successful in lowering the tannin and lignin and thereby addressing the color issues. The processing also resulted in a significant reduction in Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM).

The WETS recommendation for color removal from drinking water was a gravity filtration system using a dual media filtration of Greensand Plus and anthracite. The use of Greensand Plus requires the use of chlorine solution for activation.

Well # 2 had measurable quantity of carbon dioxide, thus it was necessary to remove it through aeration. WETS recommendation for Well # 2 was the use of its proprietary WAFU technology, which combines aeration and filtration in a single unit. Since CO2 was the only gaseous component, no blower is required in the aeration zone of WAFU.

Forest WSC Well # 2 was producing 200 gpm flow with color issues. WETS conducted a pilot study for color removal from drinking water; the color issue was determined to be primarily due to the presence of lignin and tannin in the well water. Multiple pilot testing arrangements were performed using pilot aeration and pilot filtration. The pilot filter employed dual media using Greensand Plus and anthracite.

Based on its extensive experience as a water treatment company solving color issues for previous clients, WETS designed a gravity filter system with four filters to treat the color issues. The Filtration System consists of four 4 ft diameter x 12 ft tall filtration units. Water passes through Greensand filter media, which removes iron, manganese, tannins and lignins from the water. Each filter has a dedicated transfer pump, which pumps the filtered water to the GST tank. Two existing tanks were re-used as a surge tank and a holding tank. WETS designed the filtration so that well water could be used for backwash instead of distribution water.
